Vilonia, AR September 18, 2004 -- Take a journey with Mary Christensen and learn how she conquered alcoholism while discovering the treasure of her own Spirit. Her recently published book, At Rainbow’s End, depicts her Spiritual journey from alcoholism to freedom. Mary says there is one cause for addiction regardless of the form it takes. "We seek outside of ourselves for peace of mind and freedom because we haven’t found them within. To experience peace of mind and freedom, all we have to do is let go of the thoughts, feelings and beliefs that stand in the way."
Mary discovered that addiction could be viewed as a key to unlocking the mysteries of her own mind. She discusses several addictions including addiction to alcohol, food, control, safety and fear. "If you desire to make any changes in your life, you must first learn to change your mind. You have to desire freedom more than bondage to limiting ideas and beliefs."
Mary explains that alcoholics and addicts are given little hope when it comes to complete recovery and you are expected to simply manage your “disease.” Mary knew complete freedom was possible despite everything she had been told. She explains that you cannot find a cure for addiction by looking to the body as the cause. “The cause is your mind and the thoughts, feelings and beliefs you hold.”
At Rainbow’ End is a reference to A Course in Miracles, which is a foundation for inner peace. Mary says it has been a powerful instrument for her in releasing her own mind from the trap of addiction and finding inner peace. She writes about several different topics including separation verses wholeness, love, fear, guilt, forgiveness and many more. She wanted to give the reader a thorough background of the Spiritual knowledge that assisted her in releasing her own mind from the trap of addiction.
At Rainbow’s End is Mary’s journey of Spirit discovery and freedom from addiction. She hopes her experiences will assist others who are suffering from addiction in all of its various disguises. She says you do not have to have an addictive personality to read her book. It is a book about freeing the mind. It can assist anyone who desires to remove limiting ideas and beliefs and gain more personal freedom. Mary will be at the Golden Leaves book store in Hot Springs, AR for the gallery walk on October 1, 04. She will be present to sign copies of her book from 5pm-9pm.

Lumber is available in 2 main categories, hardwood and softwood. Quite simply, hardwood is harvested from any deciduous (leaf bearing) tree. While softwood is from coniferous or needle producing trees. However a wood worker also needs to decide if an engineered wood product like plywood is better suited for the job.
We will demystify the these 3 classifications by taking a close look at the 3 main choices a wood worker has to face when buying project wood.
Hardwood Some of the more common domestic hardwoods include, oak, maple, birch and poplar although your choices certainly aren't limited to these four. For exotic species there are too many to list but teak, mahogany, rose wood and purple heart are just a few.
Softwood How do you choose project wood? Both hardwood and softwood can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications but some are more resistant to UV and moisture then others. These are the ones that should be chosen when being used outside.
These particular species have natural oils and resins that fill the cells of the wood and provide, in some cases, very good protection against rot and insects. Species like cedar for example last for decades in direct contact with the ground while spruce would be rotten in under 5 years.
Of course cedar is a softwood and is used a lot throughout the furniture and house construction industry. However, some hardwoods also have very good resistance to rot and insects. Species like teak and mahogany are used a lot in the tropics for boat construction, but since the cost of these exotic hardwood species is so much in North America we tend to use softwood in the outdoor applications.
Another important factor is whether or not you want you intend to use a clear finish or paint to protect your project. Cedar needs to be sealed to prevent oils from leaching through the paint. Some species of hardwood like poplar and birch are great for accepting paint but have a tendency to blotch when stain is applied.
Dave Markel is the author of "The All Wood Working
Looking at hardwoods first, it is important to remember that these classifications really have no bearing on the true hardness of the wood, not all hardwoods are "hard". Species like poplar are much softer then pine even though poplar is classified as a hardwood.
Softwoods on the other hand include species like spruce, fir, pine and cedar and are often cheaper to buy then hardwoods. This is mainly because softwood trees grow taller and straighter than hardwood trees. This yields more lumber per log. Along with the fact that most softwood is harvested domestically it is the project wood of choice for most outdoor projects and for many indoor ones as well.
There are a number of factors that need to be considered when deciding which wood to use for what project. There are no set rules stating what wood to use for an indoor or outdoor project. Basically the characteristics of the species will determine whether or not it will stand up to the punishing conditions of the outdoors or if it better used indoors.

Rocking chairs have survived the test of many generations and a million sleepless nights. They come in fine wood, soft supple upholstery and even woven and painted. Rocking chairs have rocked new moms with day-old babies, healed broken hearts and wounded pride, and then eased the pains of getting old.
Whether you place a rocking chair on the back porch, front porch, near a fireplace, or really anywhere in your home, it will inevitably find its way into the hearts of everyone who lives there. It will become the place where a day's frustrations are soothed, plans are made and goals dreamed about. Aw, and the stories that have been related by someone as they gently rock to the rhythm of peace and tranquility. A person just cannot stay angry and uptight while they rock - its probably some great scientific principle, but tensions are dissipated and anger is subsided. You may start our vigorously rocking, but soon the proper motion is attained to bring spirits back and bring life to the right mode - relaxed and peaceful.
Walls of resistance don't stand a chance when the matter is discussed while rocking and possible arguments lose their sting. You see, rockers are not made for just men or just women, they are for anyone who wants to take a respite from daily turmoils and leisurely return to a better frame of mind. A person's religious or political affiliations can be discussed but never argues, and while you may or may not see the other person's point of view, while rocking, they are entitled to their thoughts.
These fine pieces of furniture never really die. They will just nestle themselves into future generations and rock sleepy babies, feverish children, exuberant teen-agers and wise parents and grandparents. The very wrinkles of a very bad day are always neatly ironed and laid to rest for a while, while rocking. Smiles come easily and even laughter finds its way to the surface. Conversations can utilize words or not, depending on the rocker's mood. Sometimes just a nod of the head will suffice.
History knows the wisdom of a rocking chair, and the arms of each chair have been caressed and held onto for dear life. Destiny waits in the wings for the right opportunity to make use of the splendid things that happen when someone rocks in a rocking chair. The world would probably be a better place for everyone if only our world leaders could discuss matters while rocking and fine relationships might develop and be perpetuated with a handshake and a nod -while rocking. Oh, if you are lucky enough to have one with a gentle "squeak" - it's just a wonderful "extra." Arleen has written numerous books, articles, and cookbooks. Her newsletters:
Yes, they all, each and every one of them, find a way into someone's memory, a plesant moment of the past, and a safe refuge for the future.
ENJOY!
